Finish Specifications

Dating back thousands of years, the universe of ceramic finishes is nearly limitless. Below is a brief overview of the types of finishes the studio regularly uses. Within each type of finish, there is a vast array of colors and other options. So, please let us know if there is a particular color or finish you have in mind for your project.

Natural Clay Hues

Clay hues are the unaltered color of the claybody after it has been kiln-fired. They bear a matte appearance, and they range in color from the pure white of porcelain to off-whites and earthen tones in the brown, gray, and ochre fields.

Integral Matte Pigments

For a soft tint or saturated color, we can work a pigment into the clay body that runs through the entire ceramic element. Matte pigments are available in a wide range of colors and intensities.

Colorful Glazes

For heightened color intensity and impact, we can finish the ceramic elements in a wide range of commercial, custom-blended and wholly custom-made glazes.

Gas-Fired Glazes

We also regularly finish our artwork in glazes, such as celadons and oxblood reds, that are important in the history of ceramics and have stood the test of time. These glazes undergo a chemical transformation from the flames coursing through a gas kiln and the reduction of oxygen during the kiln-firing process, resulting is a marvelously organic finish that exhibits beautiful variation from piece to piece.

Specialty Glazes

For an even more specialized effect, additional finishes such as gold, bronze, and other metallic glazes are available, as well as lusters, washes and other effects.
